The New York State Deputies Association, Inc. (NYSDA) was incorporated in 1973 as a Not-for-Profit Corporation. Among the original reasons for the corporation:
To form and perpetuate an efficient organization of the Sheriffs Deputies in New York State
To promote friendship, enjoyment, and mutual assistance among its members
To educate the citizens of the State of New York as to the workings and necessity for deputy sheriffs
To provide for exchange of information relating to duties and methods of its members.
In the decades since the original incorporation, much has changed in New York State, and NYSDA has changed with the times.
Gone are the days when everyone employed by the Sheriff was a "deputy." Sheriffs' employees now perform a wide variety of functions, each requiring its own special skill set. Specialized areas include correction officer, emergency services dispatcher, computer analyst and evidence technician to name just a few. It is now more accurate to say that NYSDA works on behalf of Sheriffs' employees in a number of specialized functions.
NYSDA has adopted a significant role in labor relations for member organizations, offering on-site assistance with contract negotiations, grievance processing, disciplinary matters, PERB charges, and other labor/management issues for our full-service members. Our Labor Assistance Center provides useful tools for labor relations, including copies of current agreements, prior arbitration awards, census information, and other useful tools for contract negotiation and administration.
We offer scholarships to deserving students who are pursuing a career in the criminal justice field. Our quarterly newsletter provides updates on items of interest. We also establish individual web pages for member organizations.
If you are interested in membership, either as an individual or as an organization, please check our Membership page. Feel free to e-mail Executive Director Tom Ross or call (585) 247-9322 if you have any other questions.
